Animation 11

Course Description

Students are introduced to the key aspects of animation using computers and industry standard software. The focus of this course is on character animation. Students start with an idea, sketch out a character, then model and animate it using 3D Studio Max. The final product is a 30 second video incorporating all the skills mastered in the course. An art background is extremely helpful.


Term 1 Assignments

  • Complete the apple/orange scene in 3D Studio Max (found under Help-Tutorials menu in 3D Studio)
  • Complete the Modelling an Airplane Tutorial (found under Help-Tutorials menu in 3D Studio Max)
  • Modeling Tubby McChubs' Body (found under Help-Tutorials menu in 3D Studio Max)
  • Modeling Tubby McChubs' Head in 3D Studio Max
  • Modeling Tubby McChubs' Accessories in 3D Studio Max 
  • Designing your own character (pen and paper)
  • Create a clay model of your character

Term 2 Assignments

  • Modeling of your own character in 3D Studio Max
  • Creating a storyboard for your animation
  • Rigging your character using Character Studio

Term 3 Assignments

  • Character Studio Tutorials 1) Modifying Footsteps,  2) Creating a Distinctive Walk, 3) Your choice - one of: Making a Biped Stop and Start Walking, Gymnastic Flip or Animating a Pratfall or Animation a Pratfall
  • Animate your scene, saving a .max file for each scene
  • Render each .max file into an AVI or MOV. For help with render setting see below.
  • Combine each movie, along with sounds found at sounddogs.com, using Adobe Premier.
