Using the tools of professional designers students will explore the full range digital media to capture, edit, and create 2-D and 3-D interactive web-based applications. Included are the use of sophisticated graphics, video and sound editing, 3-D modeling and animation, and media authoring tools.

TERM 1 ASSIGNMENTS & PROJECTS

COURSE INTRO
 
01 - Basic Photoshop Collage
               
Create a photo collage of images around your own picture on a 1000x800 pixel canvus in Photoshop Elements. All images used must be cut out in shapes other than rectangles.

CORELDRAW
02 - CorelDRAW Basics Tutorial
  Follow the 9 CorelDRAW totorials posted in the common drive.  Each tutorial should be done on a separate page in the Corel ile that is handed in.
03 - Coffee Shop Logo & Optional Logo Trace
 
  Using the tutorial in the Common Drive, follow through the "Coffee Shop Tutorial" in CorelDRAW.  Mark is based on accuracy of result.
EXTENSION:  Convert the 3 logos in the same directory to a vector format.
 
04 - Napster Logo Recreation
 
  Take a jpg of the Napster logo and create a vector image of it in Corel.  Mark is based on accuracy of result.

05 - Silhouette Trace
 
  Find an photo of a person performing an action (sports, dancing, stretching, etc.).  Trace the outline of the person to create a black silhouette that could be used for a business card logo.  The finished product must be one curve (ie. no groups).  Final project should include 3 separate traces.

08 -Custom Text Styles
 
  Go to the following website and select several font styles you like.  Follow the tutorials to make as many as you can.  As you finish each one, save it as a JPG.  Hand in as many as you have completed by the due date.    
09 - Tutorial Based Learning
 
  In-class exercise:  Using a site such as www.tutorialized.com, find a Photoshop Tutorial (on anything you'd like) and attempt to follow it.  Marks given for on task and ability to explain new skill learnt in the program.  
10 - Magazine Cover

11 - Engraving Collage  
   Open up "Project 7 - Engraving Collage" from the Common Drive (Graphics 11/Photoshop/Collage).  Follow the tutorial to create the web banner and hand it in to the handin folder.  
12 -  Custom Website Banner
 
    Using skills and layout designs from the Engraving Collage and other Photoshop techniques, create a custom banner for your website.  Your website can be on the topic of your choice.  Your banner must meet the following criteria:
  • 760 x 150 pixels
  • Minimum 5 elements combined smoothly and elegantly.
  • Blending options effectively utilized
  • Must include name of your site
  • Colours are used sparingly and fit with the theme of your site.
 

TERM 2 ASSIGNMENTS & PROJECTS


MS FRONTPAGE
 
01 - Website Design
                
Students will create a working webpage involving a minimum of 3 pages.  Focus will be on the layout and appearance of the site, not on content.

Create a Web 2.0 single page site using design principles from the following website.
 
02 - Photoshop Wallpaper Assignment
 
  Students will create custom wallpapers using Adobe Photoshop.  Makrs will be based on complexity and number of wallpapers submitted.  As a starting point, students may wish to use the attached tutorials.  Although students are encouraged to create their own designs, a high marks can be obtained by simply following the given tutorials.
Note: A good wallpaper size is 1024-768 pixels.

The only criteria is that everything must be created from scratch.  NO PRE-MADE images from the web may be used.
 
     
GMAX 3D Modeling
 
03 - Basic Tutorial
 
  Using the built in tutorial entitled "Getting Started," create a mace, learn how to manipulate your viewports, and create a basic animation of it rotating.  
04 - Table & Glass Model
 
  Using the tutorials posted in the common drive under Gmax, model a table with legs and a wine glass to sit on top of it in Gmax.  
05 - GMax Room Design
 
  Students will create a 3D room of their choice.  A-level work will show excellent detail of objects with proper scale of objects.  The following are lessons we have covered which will help you in your design (there are tutorials for each of these in the common drive):
  • Texture Map
  • Boolean Combines
  • Using Splines and Extruding
  • Freeze/Hide View Options
  • MeshSmooth and Iterations
  • Bend, Twist, Etc. modifiers.
 
  06 - GMAX Outpost Level Tutorial
 
     Create the "Outpost" 3D station and terrain from within the GMax tutorials.  
  07 - GMax "Mario-Kart" Modeling
 
  Students will model a "Mario Kart" style go-kart  in Gmax.  Examples of Go-Karts are available in the common drive.  This is part 1 of a 3 part assignment in which we will be creating a vehicle, a character, and a terrain map to animate on.
Marks for the Kart will be based on:
  • Kart is based on mutliple pieces beyond simple shapes (modifiers and mesh editing should be used)
  • Complexity and intricacy of design
  • Details of design (motor, wheels, etc.) - the more details the better
 

TERM 3 ASSIGNMENTS & PROJECTS

GMAX (Cont. from Term 2)
01 - 3D Character Creation
     Create a 3D modeled character with detail (especially in the face and hands), Use the "EXTRUDE" tool for  polygon faces to create lower arm, elbow joints, and upper arm from a hand to allow for flexibility of your character..  This character will eventully be placed in your Go_kart as the driver.
Warning: Your polygon count should be kept less than 50,000.
02 - Animated Track   
                  Create a track for your Go-Kart and character to race around.  Once the track has been created, use the "line" tool to create the path you want the kart to follow and choose: ANIMATION > CONSTRAINS > PATH CONSTRAINT to apply a "follow path" animation.  
     
 SONY VEGAS MOVIE STUDIO  
  03 - Movie Montage  
   Using Sony Vegas Movie Studio, students will edit together a 2-3 minute themed video using multiple skills including:
  • Green Screen
  • Videos taken by student
  • Videos captured from internet (using Camtasia or www.vixy.net)
  • Digital images taken by student
  • Digital images captures from internet
  • Voice-over recorded and edited
  • Custom soundtrack created in Sony Acid
  • Music track on background (student choice)
